About

Aisha Tyler was born on September 18, 1970, in San Francisco, California. Her early life included a year in Ethiopia and time in an ashram in Oakland. Her parents separated when she was ten, and she was raised by her father. Tyler discovered an early interest in comedy at McAteer High School, attending improv sessions. She pursued her academic endeavors by graduating from Dartmouth College in 1992 with a degree in Government and Environmental Policy. After a brief period working in advertising, Tyler decided to pursue a comedy career, traveling across the country as a stand-up comedian.

Her television career gained significant traction in 2001 when she became the host of “Talk Soup,” a role where she was the first African-American female host. Following this, she hosted “The 5th Wheel” in 2001-2002. Tyler expanded her acting portfolio with roles in films such as “The Santa Clause 2” (2002), “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause” (2006), “Death Sentence” (2007), and “Balls of Fury” (2007). On television, she had recurring roles in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” (2004-2005) and “24” (2005). Notably, she portrayed Dr. Charlie Wheeler in “Friends” during its ninth and tenth seasons, and Andrea Marino in the first season of “Ghost Whisperer.” Since 2013, Tyler has hosted the American version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” She also provides the voice for Lana Kane in the animated series “Archer” (2009-2023) and Dr. Tara Lewis in “Criminal Minds” (2015-present).

Tyler is also an accomplished director, making her feature directorial debut with “Axis” (2017), a crowdfunded film that was shot in seven days and received critical acclaim, winning an Outstanding Achievement in Feature Filmmaking award at the 2017 Newport Beach Film Festival. She has directed episodes for various television series including “Fear the Walking Dead” (2015), “Roswell, New Mexico” (2019), “Criminal Minds” (2017-2025), and “The Walking Dead” (2022). A New York Times bestselling author, her second book, “Self-Inflicted Wounds,” was published in 2013. Tyler is also an entrepreneur, having launched Courage+Stone, a line of premium ready-to-drink cocktails, in 2020. She is a recognized advocate for inclusion in the gaming community and has lent her voice to video games such as “Halo: Reach,” “Gears of War 3,” and “Watch Dogs.”
