Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, professionally known as Akshay Kumar, was born on September 9, 1967, in Amritsar, Punjab, India. His early life involved a strong interest in sports and martial arts, which led him to learn sword fighting and martial arts in Bangkok, where he also worked as a waiter. He studied martial arts in Hong Kong and earned a Black Belt in Taekwondo in India. His foray into modeling, suggested by a student, led to his entry into the film industry after he was offered roles due to his success as a model.
Kumar made his acting debut in 1991 with “Saugandh.” His breakthrough came with the 1992 action thriller “Khiladi,” a film that established his reputation as an action star. Throughout the 1990s, he starred in several successful action films, including the notable “Khiladi” series, which encompassed movies like “Mr. Bond” (1992), “Main Khiladi Tu Anari” (1994), “Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi” (1997), and “Khiladi 420” (1999). He performed his own stunts, a characteristic that became a trademark of his early career. By the early 2000s, Kumar diversified his roles, venturing into romantic and comedic genres, marking a turning point in his career with films like “Hera Pheri” (2000), “Dhadkan” (2000), and “Ajnabee” (2001), for which he received a Filmfare Award for Best Villain.
His career continued to evolve with commercially successful and critically acclaimed performances in films such as “Andaaz” (2003), “Khakee” (2004), “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” (2004), and “Garam Masala” (2005), which earned him another Filmfare Award for Best Comedian. The period from 2007 to 2011 saw consistent commercial success with hits like “Namastey London” (2007), “Heyy Babyy” (2007), “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” (2007), and “Welcome” (2007). He also ventured into television, hosting “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi” from 2008. From 2012 onwards, Kumar further solidified his position with a mix of commercial blockbusters and socially relevant films like “Rowdy Rathore” (2012), “OMG: Oh My God!” (2012), “Special 26” (2013), “Baby” (2015), “Airlift” (2016), and “Rustom” (2016), the latter two earning him a National Film Award for Best Actor. His commitment to social causes was reflected in films like “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” (2017) and “Pad Man” (2018).
