Alan Gordon, born on October 16, 1981, in Long Beach, California, established a notable career as a forward in professional soccer, primarily within Major League Soccer (MLS). His journey began in college soccer, playing two years at Yavapai College where he scored 39 goals. He then transferred to Oregon State University, earning All-Pac-10 honors twice and scoring 26 goals in his final two years. Gordon was drafted 53rd overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the Los Angeles Galaxy, though he initially signed with the Portland Timbers of the A-League, leading the league in goals with 17 in 27 matches and being named A-League Rookie of the Year.
Gordon’s MLS career saw him play for multiple teams, including the LA Galaxy (2005-2010, 2014-2016), Chivas USA (2010), Toronto FC (2011), San Jose Earthquakes (2011-2014), Colorado Rapids (2017), and Chicago Fire (2018). He was known for his physical play style, excelling as a target forward who could hold up the ball and score important goals, often coming off the bench. A significant period was with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2012, where he achieved a career-best 13 goals in 23 appearances, contributing to their Supporters’ Shield win. He is also a two-time MLS Cup winner (2005, 2014) with the LA Galaxy.
Internationally, Gordon earned two caps for the United States men’s national team. His debut in October 2012 against Antigua & Barbuda saw him assist the game-winning goal in a 2014 World Cup qualifier. He later participated in the 2015 Gold Cup. Gordon officially announced his retirement from professional soccer on October 28, 2018, following a 15-season career that spanned various clubs and saw him contribute to multiple team successes.
