Alessandra Corine Ambrosio was born in Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on April 11, 1981. She began local modeling classes at the age of twelve and participated in Brazil’s ‘Elite Model Look’ competition in 1996, where she was among the twenty finalists. At fifteen, she debuted in modeling for Dilson Stein. Her career progressed when she appeared on the cover of Brazilian Elle magazine. Subsequently, she was signed by Guess for its Fall 2000 Millennium Campaign. In 2000, she was hired by the American lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret, making her runway debut at its fashion show. In 2004, she launched her swimwear line, Alessandra Ambrosio by Sais, as a division of Rosa Cha, which sold 10,000 units in its first month.
Ambrosio continued to achieve career milestones, including modeling at The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2005, where she wore lingerie made from candy. In 2009, she appeared on the cover of Marie Claire’s July edition with Sacha Baron Cohen to promote his film Brüno. She became the new face of the Brazilian sportswear company Colcci, featuring in an ad campaign with Ashton Kutcher for their Spring/Summer 2012 collection. In 2014, she introduced her fashion and lifestyle brand, Ale by Alessandra, partnering with US retailer Cherokee to offer women’s formal wear. She has also been an ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, contributing to awareness efforts.
Her career further expanded into television and film. In 2006, she made her silver screen debut in the James Bond film Casino Royale as a tennis player. She has made special television appearances on shows such as Entourage, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, and served as a guest judge on The Tyra Banks Show and Project Runway. In 2007, she acted in the ‘The Yips’ episode of How I Met Your Mother alongside other Victoria’s Secret Angels. She has been a cover model and featured in editorials for numerous fashion magazines globally. Additionally, she has hosted award shows like The MTV Music Awards and Fashion Rocks.
