Alex Johnson, born on April 3, 1989, in Hudson, Wisconsin, began her climbing career at a young age, showcasing exceptional talent in bouldering. She won her first US Open National Championship at age thirteen in 2003 and became Open Pan American Champion the following year. In 2008, Johnson made history as the first American to secure a Boulder World Cup win on US soil, a feat she repeated in 2010 in Switzerland, making her the first American to win two Boulder World Cup gold medals. Her early career also included winning the American Bouldering Series Youth Climbing National Championship in 2002 and the Adult National Championships in 2003. After a period focusing on track and pole vaulting, earning a scholarship to Minnesota State University, she returned to climbing, relocating to Colorado to pursue bouldering professionally.
Johnson transitioned from competitive climbing in 2016 to concentrate on outdoor projects, establishing a notable record of first female ascents and high-grade sends up to V14 with her ascent of ‘The Swarm’. She briefly returned to competition in 2019, earning a silver medal at the US Nationals and a spot on the US Team for Olympic qualification attempts, though she narrowly missed qualifying. Her competitive achievements continued with a silver medal at the 2021 North American Cup and a bronze in 2022 before a temporary hiatus for ACL surgery in 2023. Throughout her career, Johnson has consistently pushed boundaries in climbing and in advocacy.
In 2018, Johnson publicly identified as LGBTQ+, becoming a vocal advocate for equality in sports and outdoor activities. Her personal story, combined with her ascent of ‘The Swarm’, was featured in a 2022 Reel Rock Film Tour film, highlighting her journey and impact. Johnson’s resilience and dedication are evident in her consistent performance and her commitment to fostering inclusivity in the climbing community. She continues to set ambitious goals for outdoor climbing, looking towards 2025 and beyond after her recovery.
