Alex Sandro Silva Pereira was born on July 7, 1987, in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Brazil. Growing up, he faced challenges, dropping out of middle school to work as a bricklayer’s assistant and later in a tire shop. Influenced by his peers, he struggled with alcoholism, which he sought to overcome by beginning kickboxing training in 2009. This decision marked a turning point in his life, leading him into a distinguished career in martial arts. Before his rise in kickboxing and MMA, Pereira also had an amateur boxing career in Brazil, reportedly competing in 28 matches with 25 wins by knockout and only 3 losses, demonstrating his striking power early on.
Pereira’s kickboxing career saw significant success. In 2012, he won the Jungle Fight Middleweight Title and the WGP -85 kg/187 lb Championship. He made his Glory debut in 2014, winning the Glory 14: Zagreb – Middleweight Contender Tournament. His career highlights include two victories over Israel Adesanya in kickboxing, one by unanimous decision and another by a left hook knockout. He won the Glory Middleweight title in 2017 and defended it successfully multiple times. In 2019, he became the first double champion in Glory history by winning the interim Glory Light Heavyweight Championship. He later won the undisputed Glory Light Heavyweight Championship in 2021, holding two belts simultaneously before being stripped of his Middleweight title.
Pereira transitioned to professional mixed martial arts in 2015, signing with the UFC in 2021. He quickly ascended through the ranks, defeating Andreas Michailidis, Bruno Silva, and Sean Strickland. In 2022, he captured the UFC Middleweight Championship by defeating Israel Adesanya via TKO in the fifth round at UFC 281. After losing the title in a rematch, Pereira moved to the Light Heavyweight division in 2023. He secured the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 295, becoming a two-division UFC champion. Pereira has continued to defend his light heavyweight title, showcasing his consistent performance at an elite level. He also founded “Instituto Poatan” in São Paulo, which offers free combat sports training, English lessons, and computer classes to over 700 children, many from disadvantaged backgrounds.
