Alicia Vikander

Alicia Amanda Vikander was born on October 3, 1988, in Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län, Sweden. Her mother, Maria Fahl, is a stage and screen actress, and her father, Svante Vikander, is a psychiatrist. Her parents separated when she was two months old, and she was primarily raised by her mother. Vikander began her artistic journey at a young age, performing in minor stage productions at The Göteborg Opera and training as a ballet dancer at the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm and the School of American Ballet in New York. Her early career also included appearances in Swedish short films and television series, gaining initial recognition for her role as Josefin Björn-Tegebrandt in the TV drama “Second Avenue” (2007–2008). Injuries in her late teens shifted her focus from dance to acting.

Her feature film debut came in 2009 with “Pure,” for which she received the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress. This breakthrough performance led to wider recognition, particularly in 2012, when she portrayed Princess Ekaterina “Kitty” Alexandrovna Shcherbatskaya in Joe Wright’s film adaptation of “Anna Karenina” and Queen Caroline Mathilde in the Danish film “A Royal Affair.” These roles earned her a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination and laid the groundwork for her international career. Vikander continued to build her filmography with roles in diverse projects, including the Julian Assange biopic “The Fifth Estate” (2013) and the Swedish drama “Hotel” (2013).

A significant turning point occurred between 2014 and 2015, when Vikander achieved global acclaim. She starred as activist Vera Brittain in “Testament of Youth” (2014), an artificial intelligence in “Ex Machina” (2014), and painter Gerda Wegener in “The Danish Girl” (2015). Her performance in “Ex Machina” earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress. For “The Danish Girl,” she received the Academy Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress, solidifying her status as a leading actress in the industry. She has since starred in films such as “Jason Bourne” (2016), “Tomb Raider” (2018), “The Green Knight” (2021), and the miniseries “Irma Vep” (2022).
