Daphne Eurydice Zuniga was born in San Francisco, California, on October 28, 1962. Her mother, Agnes A. Janawicz, is a Unitarian minister of Polish and Finnish descent, and her father, Joaquin Alberto Zuniga, a professor of philosophy from Guatemala. Zuniga showed an early interest in acting, attending the Young Conservatory program at the American Conservatory Theater of San Francisco. After her parents’ divorce, she moved to Reading, Vermont, graduating from Woodstock Union High School in 1980 before enrolling in the theatre arts program at the University of California, Los Angeles. While a student, she made her film debut in “The Dorm That Dripped Blood” (1982), followed by a lead role in “The Initiation” (1984).
Zuniga’s career gained momentum with a lead role opposite John Cusack in Rob Reiner’s “The Sure Thing” (1985). She further solidified her presence in Hollywood with her role as Princess Vespa in Mel Brooks’ cult comedy “Spaceballs” (1987) and a supporting part in “The Fly II” (1989). A significant turning point in her career was her portrayal of Jo Reynolds on the successful television series “Melrose Place” from 1992 to 1996, which brought her widespread recognition. Following “Melrose Place”, she continued to appear in numerous television productions, including a lead role as Lynn Kerr in “Beautiful People” (2005-2006) and a recurring role as Victoria Davis on “One Tree Hill” from 2008 to 2012.
Beyond acting, Zuniga has also stepped into roles as a producer and director. She co-produced and co-directed the 2007 documentary “TED: The Future We Will Create: Inside the World of TED.” In 2018, she directed her first feature film, “The Protégé,” later released as “Deadly Assistant” (2019). Her career has also seen her engaged in environmental activism, becoming a founding member of the Earth Communications Office and working with organizations such as the Natural Resources Defense Council. Zuniga’s diverse career spanning film, television, direction, and advocacy, including reprising her role as Princess Vespa in the upcoming “Spaceballs 2” (2027) and a “Melrose Place” reboot, showcases her lasting impact in the entertainment industry and beyond.
