Allen Leech

Allen Leech was born Alan Leech on May 18, 1981, in Killiney, County Dublin, Ireland. His interest in acting began at an early age, specifically at 11, when he played the Cowardly Lion in a school production of “The Wizard of Oz.” This experience led him to pursue acting professionally, securing a small role in the Gate Theatre’s 1998 production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” when he was 17. He later attended Trinity College Dublin, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s Degree in Drama and Theatre Studies, often prioritizing auditions and acting roles during his studies.

Leech gained early recognition in Irish cinema with major film roles such as Vincent Cusack in “Cowboys & Angels” (2003) and Mo Chara in “Man About Dog” (2004), for which he received an Irish Film & Television Award nomination. His television career expanded with a role as Marcus Agrippa in the HBO historical drama series “Rome” (2007) and Francis Dereham in “The Tudors.” His career advanced significantly with his casting as Tom Branson in the ITV period drama “Downton Abbey” (2010–2015), a role he reprised in subsequent feature films. This role brought him widespread recognition and several Screen Actors Guild Awards for outstanding ensemble performance.

Following his success in television, Leech continued to take on diverse film roles, including John Cairncross in “The Imitation Game” (2014) alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, and Paul Prenter in the critically and commercially successful biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018). His performance in “Bohemian Rhapsody” earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He has also ventured into production, serving as executive producer for television series like “Too Good to Be True” (2024) and “The Vanishing Triangle” (2023), demonstrating his commitment to various aspects of filmmaking and storytelling.
