He has been ranked as one of the Top 100 ATP players for nearly a decade and made the top 10 in 2017.
Carreño Busta was born in the coastal city of Gijón in northern Spain in 1991. As a junior player, he was ranked as one of the 10 best in the world and turned professional aged 18. He emerged during the opening years of the 2010s, winning several Futures and Challenger titles. 2016 saw his breakthrough into the Top 50 of the world rankings as he earned his first notable title at that year’s Winston-Salem Open. He also made the doubles final at the US Open, pairing with countryman Guillermo Garcia-López. In 2017, he made the singles semi-final at the same tournament for the first time and finished the year ranked as the 10th-best player in the world.
The most notable event in Carreño’s recent career has been his Olympic medal glory, which saw him defeat some of the game’s other greatest player to take his place on the podium. He followed that by reaching the fourth-round of the 2022 Australian Open.
