About

Amandla Stenberg was born on October 23, 1998, in Los Angeles, California. Her early career began at age four with catalog modeling for Disney, followed by commercials for clients such as Boeing and Kmart. Stenberg’s acting debut came in 2011 with the film “Colombiana,” where she portrayed a younger version of Zoe Saldana’s character. Her breakthrough role arrived in 2012 as Rue in Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games,” a performance that earned her a Teen Choice Award for Film Choice Chemistry alongside Jennifer Lawrence in 2012, and nominations for an NAACP Image Award and a Black Reel Award in 2013. Following this success, she had a recurring role in “Sleepy Hollow” from 2013 to 2014 and voiced Bia in the commercially successful animated film “Rio 2” in 2014.

Stenberg continued to expand her filmography throughout the mid-2010s, appearing in the short-lived series “Mr. Robinson” in 2015 and in Beyoncé’s visual album “Lemonade” in 2016. The same year, she signed with The Society Management modeling agency and received the BET YoungStars Award. Her leading role in 2017’s “Everything, Everything”, an adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s novel, earned her the 2018 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and a Teen Choice Award nomination. This period also saw her globally recognized for her activism, using social media to address social awareness topics such as cultural appropriation, intersectional feminism, and biracial identity, leading to her being named “Feminist of the Year” in 2015 by the Ms. Foundation for Women and appearing on TIME Magazine’s “Most Influential Teens” lists in 2015 and 2016.

In 2018, Stenberg starred in “The Hate U Give,” a critically acclaimed film based on Angela Thomas’s novel inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. Her portrayal of Starr Carter garnered significant praise, culminating in an Academy Award co-presentation alongside civil rights activist John Lewis. Other notable roles include “The Darkest Minds” (2018), “Where Hands Touch” (2018), “The Eddy” (2020), “Dear Evan Hansen” (2021), the hit comedy-slasher “Bodies Bodies Bodies” (2022), and “My Animal” (2023). In 2024, Stenberg took on dual leading roles as Osha and Mae in the LucasFilm & Disney+ series “The Acolyte” within the Star Wars franchise, which garnered over 11 million views globally in its first five days. Her upcoming projects include “Wildwood” (voice role, 2026) and “Children of Blood and Bone” (2027), where she will play Princess Amari. Stenberg has also co-written the comic book series “Niobe: She is Life” (2015) and “Niobe: She is Death” (2017).
