About

Eliza Jane Scanlen, born on January 6, 1999, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, embarked on her acting career in 2015. She initially gained traction with a recurring role as Tabitha Ford in the Australian soap opera “Home and Away” in 2016, appearing in 15 episodes. Her breakthrough came in 2018 when she starred as Amma Crellin alongside Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson in the HBO miniseries “Sharp Objects.” This role garnered significant critical acclaim and led to her inclusion in The Hollywood Reporter’s “10 Rising Television Stars” in December 2017, followed by the 2018 Breakthrough Award from Australians In Film in October 2018.

Scanlen’s film career began in 2019 with a leading role as Milla Finlay in the drama “Babyteeth,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival that same year. She also portrayed Beth March in Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of “Little Women,” starring alongside Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Laura Dern, Chris Cooper, and Florence Pugh. This film received six Academy Award nominations and grossed $218 million. In 2020, she appeared as Lenora in Antonio Campos’s thriller “The Devil All the Time.” She also made her directorial debut with the Australian short film “Mukbang,” which she also wrote. Her career continued with roles in M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Old” in 2021, and as Young Eleanor Roosevelt in the Showtime series “The First Lady” in 2022.

In 2023, Scanlen took on the lead role of Jem Starling in Laurel Parmet’s “The Starling Girl,” receiving critical praise for her portrayal. Her theatre background includes her professional debut in the Sydney Theatre Company’s 2019 production of “Lord of the Flies” and her Broadway debut in November 2019 as Mayella Ewell in Aaron Sorkin’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” at the Shubert Theater. In 2024, she played Cecily Cardew in the National Theatre’s revival of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Her upcoming projects include the BBC series “Dope Girls” (2025) and the film “Caddo Lake” (2024), further solidifying her diverse acting portfolio.
