Amber Atherton was born in Hong Kong around 1991 and later moved to the United Kingdom. Her parents encouraged entrepreneurship from an early age, and she began learning to code at ten. As a child, she sold books and CD ROMs online and pursued modeling as a teenager. She attended Benenden School in Kent, England, a private boarding school. In high school, at age 16, Atherton founded My Flash Trash in 2007, an online jewelry marketplace initially used to resell jewelry from Hong Kong trips. She briefly attended the London College of Fashion and interned at Vogue and Hermès before dedicating herself to her business.
In 2011, Amber Atherton co-starred in the first three seasons of the TV show “Made in Chelsea,” appearing in 19 episodes. During this time, her My Flash Trash business gained significant attention when Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, purchased and wore seven pieces of jewelry from the site in 2012. Atherton worked with angel investors and partnered with a factory in China, eventually selling My Flash Trash to a Hong Kong manufacturing group for approximately £2 million in 2016. She also had her own accessory line sold in London boutiques and served as a judge on the TV show “Pocket Money Pitch.”
After selling My Flash Trash, Atherton founded Zyper, a social media marketing platform focusing on connecting brands with superfans. Zyper was incubated through Y Combinator. She relocated the startup from London to the United States in 2017, securing £750,000 in funding in 2017 and an additional £2 million in 2018. Zyper was acquired by Discord in 2021, where Atherton subsequently served as Head of Strategic Communities. In 2021, she established The Atherton Award to promote female entrepreneurship and published the book “The Rise of Virtual Communities.” She is currently a partner at the venture capital firm Patron, having invested in over 35 startups by 2024. She also serves on the board of GBx Global, a Silicon Valley-based community for British entrepreneurs.
