Brett Gray was born on August 7, 1996, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His acting career began early, with his first school play at age six, followed by a professional stage debut at the Academy of Music when he was seven. He furthered his training as a Theater major, graduating from The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts in 2014, which provided a foundation for his subsequent work in the entertainment industry.
Gray gained significant recognition for his lead role as Jamal Turner in the Netflix series ‘On My Block,’ which ran from 2018 to 2021 for 38 episodes. This role marked his first leading performance and allowed him to explore physical comedy. Following this, he took on a minor role in the critically acclaimed 2019 Netflix limited series ‘When They See Us,’ appearing as Clarence in one episode. In addition to live-action roles, Gray expanded into voice acting, securing a leading role as Dal R’El in the animated series ‘Star Trek: Prodigy,’ which premiered in 2021 and continued through 2024 with 40 episodes. He also lent his voice to the video game ‘Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova’ in 2022.
His career progression includes television appearances in ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ in 2018 as Reggie Price, and ‘Chicago P.D.’ in 2019 as Aiden West, each for one episode. More recently, Gray played Felix in the Amazon Prime mini-series ‘I’m a Virgo’ in 2023 for seven episodes and joined the cast of ‘The Chi’ in a supporting role as Damien from 2023 to 2025 across 18 episodes. Beyond acting, Gray launched a music career, releasing his debut single, “Old Thing Back,” in June 2018, followed by his EP ‘Easy Daze’ on his birthday in August 2018, demonstrating his multifaceted talents.
