Justin Theroux

Justin Paul Theroux was born on August 10, 1971, in Washington, D.C. His mother, Phyllis Grissim Theroux, is an essayist and author, and his father, Eugene Theroux, is a corporate lawyer. Theroux is also the nephew of renowned travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux. He pursued visual arts and drama at Bennington College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After moving to New York City, he initially focused on visual arts but soon transitioned to stage acting, performing in numerous off-Broadway plays before starting his feature film career. His early career saw him balancing theatrical work with film roles.

Theroux’s filmography includes a range of roles, from comedic to dramatic. He gained significant recognition for his collaborations with director David Lynch in the surrealist art films “Mulholland Drive” (2001) and “Inland Empire” (2006). He also appeared in notable films such as “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” (1997), “American Psycho” (2000), “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” (2003), “Miami Vice” (2006), “The Girl on the Train” (2016), and “Bumblebee” (2018). Beyond acting, Theroux has made substantial contributions as a screenwriter, penning scripts for commercially successful films like “Tropic Thunder” (2008), “Iron Man 2” (2010), and “Rock of Ages” (2012).

In television, Theroux starred as Kevin Garvey in the critically acclaimed HBO mystery drama series “The Leftovers” (2014–2017), a role for which he earned widespread praise and a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination. He continued his television work with prominent roles such as Dr. James Mantleray in the Netflix miniseries “Maniac” (2018) and Allie Fox in the Apple TV+ adaptation of “The Mosquito Coast” (2021–2023), based on his uncle’s novel. He most recently starred in the HBO satirical political miniseries “White House Plumbers” (2023) and produced the ABC television event “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” for which he won Primetime Emmy Awards.
