About

Amy Lou Adams was born in Vicenza, Italy, on August 20, 1974, to American parents. She was raised in a Mormon family in Castle Rock, Colorado, one of seven children. In her early career, Adams sang in school choirs, trained as a dancer, and worked as a greeter at The Gap and as a Hooters hostess. She performed in dinner theater in productions such as “Brigadoon” and “A Chorus Line.” Adams was discovered by a Minneapolis dinner-theater director, leading her to further regional theater work.

Her film career began with a supporting role in “Drop Dead Gorgeous” (1999). Following this, she moved to Los Angeles, securing a part in the Fox television production of “Cruel Intentions” (1999), which was later released as the direct-to-video “Cruel Intentions 2” (2000). After several television appearances and failed series, she gained a significant role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Steven Spielberg’s “Catch Me If You Can” (2002). Despite this, consistent major roles did not immediately follow.

Adams gained significant attention with the low-budget independent film “Junebug” (2005), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her breakthrough leading role came in “Enchanted” (2007), where her portrayal of Giselle earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She continued to receive critical recognition for her roles, including a second Academy Award nomination for “Doubt” (2008), and further nominations and awards for films like “The Fighter” (2010), “The Master” (2012), “American Hustle” (2013), “Big Eyes” (2014), “Arrival” (2016), and “Vice” (2018). Her performance in the HBO miniseries “Sharp Objects” (2018) also garnered an Emmy nomination. Adams’ career spans both commercial successes and critically acclaimed independent features, cementing her status as a versatile and established actress.
