United States Lil Rel Howery has established himself as a prominent comedian, actor, and producer, known for his versatile performances in both film and television.
BuzzFeed Studios and actor and comedian Lil Rel Howery are partnering on “Saving the Neighborhood,” a new series examining the “existential threats” facing neighborhoods. Howery serves as Director and Executive Producer of the series, which was created by Sean Flax of Endless Roots.
Lil Rel Howery joined kweliTV as Head of Comedy. In this role, he will collaborate with kweliTV Founder and CEO DeShuna Spencer to secure new comedy content for distribution.
Aura Entertainment acquired the action comedy “Code 3,” starring Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery, and Aimee Carrero, for distribution. Howery also serves as an executive producer for "Code 3."
Milton “Lil Rel” Howery Jr., born on December 17, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois, began his journey in comedy at a young age. Influenced by comedians like Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, he immersed himself in the art of comedy, studying programs like Def Comedy Jam. While attending Crane High School, Howery penned original comedic scenes for a talent show, showcasing his natural ability to entertain and receiving enthusiastic approval from his peers and teachers. This early success solidified his commitment to a career in comedy.
After high school, Howery sought opportunities to perform, finding a regular spot at The Lion’s Den in Chicago. His talent quickly earned him recognition within the local comedy scene. In 2001, he made his television debut on BET’s Comic View, which provided him with national exposure and led to subsequent appearances on the show. His career progressed with roles in various urban hits and television shows, including his national film debut in MGM Studio’s “Barbershop 2” and appearances on TV One’s “Bill Bellamy’s: Who Got Jokes” and HBO’s “Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy.” A notable turn came with NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” where his memorable characters resonated with audiences, leading to a spot on NBC’s Diversity Showcase and the “Just for Laughs Chicago Festival.” In 2009, he founded The Lil Rel Company, initially for his stand-up material, which soon evolved to encompass his broader brand.
Howery’s career reached superstar status with his role as TSA agent Rod Williams in the Oscar-winning film “Get Out” (2017). His performance earned him the Best Comedic Performance in a Movie at the MTV Movie & Television Awards and an IMAGE Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Following this success, he took on a lead role in the film “Uncle Drew” and guest-starred in HBO’s “Insecure.” He also executive produced, wrote, and starred in the sketch comedy show “Friends of the People” on TruTV, and his hour-long stand-up special “RELevent” premiered on Comedy Central in 2015, executive produced by Kevin Hart. “RELevent” later gained wider recognition on Netflix, highlighting his storytelling talent. Howery continued his acting career with a starring role in the weekly primetime NBC comedy series “The Carmichael Show” and later created and starred in his own Fox sitcom, “Rel” (2018–2019), which was loosely based on his life.
