Anastasiya Merkushyna

Anastasiya Merkushyna, born on January 14, 1995, in Sumy, Ukraine, developed into a prominent biathlete under the guidance of her parents, including her mother, Iryna Merkushina, a former Ukrainian biathlete and 2003 World Championships silver medalist. Her early career was marked by significant success at the junior level. In 2012, she participated in the Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, placing 14th in both sprint and pursuit. Merkushyna earned a gold medal at the 2012 Youth World Championships in the 3 x 6 km relay and secured silver medals in the same event at the 2011 and 2013 Youth World Championships. She also achieved a bronze medal in the 10km individual at the 2013 Youth World Championships. Her junior career further includes three gold medals at the Junior European Championships in 2015 (Sprint and Pursuit) and 2016 (Individual), along with multiple silver and bronze medals in various disciplines between 2012 and 2016. She also became a two-time bronze medalist in girls’ individual at the 2013 and 2016 Junior Worlds.

Merkushyna made her World Cup debut in the 2014–15 season in Östersund, Sweden, where she finished 51st in individual and 87th in sprint. Despite a brief return to IBU Cup competitions the following season, she became a regular member of the national team from the 2016–17 season onwards. On December 11, 2016, she achieved her first World Cup relay podium, securing a bronze medal in Pokljuka, Slovenia. At the 2017 World Championships in Hochfilzen, Austria, Merkushyna delivered a notable performance for a debutant, finishing 10th in sprint, 8th in pursuit, and 14th in mass start, ultimately winning a silver medal in the 4 x 6 km relay. She represented Ukraine at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, with her best individual result being 46th in pursuit and 11th in the relay. She continued to achieve success at the World Championships, earning bronze medals in the 4 x 6 km relay in 2019 (Östersund), 2020 (Antholz), and 2021 (Pokljuka). Additionally, she clinched a gold medal in the Sprint at the 2023 European Championships in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, reinforcing her standing as a top biathlete.

Off the track, Anastasiya Merkushyna is pursuing a degree in international management at Ternopil National Economic University. In March 2022, she joined the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, demonstrating her commitment to her country. She has also served as an Athlete Ambassador for the Biathlon Integrity Unit (BIU) since 2021, advocating for safeguarding within the sport. This role involved collaboration with the BIU alongside other athletes like Julian Eberhard and Sebastian Samuelsson. Her equipment sponsors include Madshus for skis, ski poles, and ski boots, Anschutz for rifles, Polar for ammunition, and Löffler for race suits.
