Ann Winblad is a prominent American businesswoman and a pioneering venture capitalist, best known as a founding partner of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, established in 1989. With a strong educational background, including a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Business Administration from St. Catherine University and a Master’s in Education from the University of St. Thomas, Winblad began her career as a systems programmer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. In 1976, she co-founded Open Systems, Inc., an accounting software company that achieved remarkable success, selling for $15 million in 1983.
Following the sale of Open Systems, Winblad transitioned into consulting for major tech companies like IBM and Microsoft, where she also made significant investments. Her vision led to the creation of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, the first venture capital firm focused exclusively on software.
