Anna Paquin

Anna Helene Paquin was born on July 24, 1982, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Mary (Brophy), an English teacher from New Zealand, and Brian Paquin, a Canadian physical education teacher. Her family moved to Wellington, New Zealand, when she was four years old. Paquin’s acting career began unexpectedly at age nine when she accompanied her sister to an open audition for Jane Campion’s “The Piano” (1993). Despite having no prior acting experience beyond a school play, she impressed the director and was cast in the role of Flora McGrath. Her debut performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1994, making her the second-youngest Oscar winner in history. After her early success, Paquin continued to pursue acting, relocating to Los Angeles at 16 to finish high school, graduating in 2000. She then attended Columbia University for a year before dedicating herself fully to her acting career. Between 2001 and 2004, she focused on stage work in both New York and London, demonstrating her commitment to the craft beyond film.

Paquin’s career progressed with significant roles across various genres. She joined the X-Men film franchise as Rogue, appearing in “X-Men” (2000), “X2: X-Men United” (2003), and “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006). A turning point in her television career came in 2007 when she was cast as Sookie Stackhouse in HBO’s critically acclaimed vampire drama “True Blood” (2008-2014), a role for which she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 2009. Beyond acting, Paquin expanded into production, executive producing projects such as “Blue State” (2007), “Bellevue” (2017), and “Flack” (2019-2020), which she also starred in. Her recent work includes playing Brenda Warner in “American Underdog” (2021) and Julie Watson in the Netflix Original “True Spirit” (2023), based on the true story of Jessica Watson’s solo circumnavigation.
