Anthony Chan was born around 1957. He completed his Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance & Investments from Baruch College in 1979. He furthered his education at the University of Maryland, earning his Master of Arts in Economics in 1983 and his Ph.D. in Economics in May 1986. During his doctoral studies from 1985 to 1986, he also served as a Doctoral fellow at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C.
Chan began his professional career as an Economics Professor at the University of Dayton from 1986 to 1989, where he published academic articles. He then transitioned to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, working as an Economist from 1989 to 1991. Following this, he was a Senior Economist at Barclays de Zoete Wedd Government Securities from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, Chan joined JPMorgan Chase, where he became the Chief Economist, a position he held until his retirement in 2019. During his 25-year tenure at JPMorgan Chase, he annually addressed over one hundred thousand clients and delivered presentations to numerous Central Banks globally, including China’s PBOC, the Bank of Korea, and various Central Banks in Latin America. He also served on the Economic Advisory Committee of the American Bankers Association from 2001 to 2002, briefing Alan Greenspan and other board members twice a year.
After retiring from JPMorgan Chase in 2019, Chan founded Chan Economics LLC in 2020. He continues to provide insights on the global economy and financial markets through client presentations internationally and in the United States. He is a member of the Blue-Chip Monthly Forecasting panel and writes a weekly economics newsletter titled ‘People Economics’. His analysis has been quoted in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, and Investor’s Business Daily. He has made over 650 live television appearances on networks including CNBC, CNN International, Fox Business News, CGTN, and Chinese Television.
