Born on March 7, 1955, in Simla, India, Anupam Kher pursued his education at D.A.V. School in Simla and initially studied Economics at Himachal Pradesh University before dropping out to focus on Indian theatre at Panjab University. He further honed his craft at the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi, graduating in 1978. His acting career began in 1984 with the film “Saaransh,” where he portrayed a 65-year-old teacher, a role that earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Throughout his career, Kher has demonstrated his range across various genres. He gained significant recognition for his performances in films like “Tezaab” (1988), “Vijay” (1988), “Ram Lakhan” (1989), and “ChaalBaaz” (1989), securing multiple Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Comedian. His role in “Daddy” (1989) earned him a Filmfare Critics Award and a National Film Award – Special Mention. He continued to star in successful films such as “Dil” (1990), “Lamhe” (1991), “Beta” (1992), “Darr” (1993), “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!” (1994), and “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (1995).
Kher’s international career includes appearances in films like “Bend It Like Beckham” (2002), “Bride & Prejudice” (2004), “Lust, Caution” (2007), and the Oscar-winning “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012). He received a BAFTA nomination for his supporting role in the British sitcom “The Boy with the Topknot” (2017). Beyond acting, he has directed “Om Jai Jagadish” (2002), produced several films, and founded “Actor Prepares,” an acting institute in Mumbai. He has hosted TV shows and published bestselling books, showcasing his diverse contributions to the arts and media.
