Anya Chalotra was born in 1996 or 1997 in Wolverhampton, England, to a British-Indian family. She spent her upbringing in Lower Penn, Staffordshire, alongside her parents and two siblings. Her early education was completed at St. Dominic’s Grammar School for Girls in Brewood. Chalotra’s formal drama training includes a foundation course at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and a three-year degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, laying the groundwork for her professional acting career. Her commitment to performing manifested early, with roles in school and youth theatre.
Chalotra swiftly moved into professional theatre, earning a nomination for The Stage Debut Award in 2017 for her role as Hero in Matthew Dunster’s production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ at Shakespeare’s Globe. She continued to receive recognition for her stage work, including performances in April De Angelis’ ‘The Village’ (2018) at Theatre Royal Stratford East, David Hare’s ‘Peter Gynt’ (2019) at the National Theatre, and Rupert Goold’s stage adaptation of ‘Cold War’ (2023-2024) at the Almeida Theatre. These experiences provided a solid foundation for her transition to screen acting.
Her screen debut came in 2018 with the BBC comedy-drama ‘Wanderlust,’ where she played Jennifer Ashman. The same year, she appeared as Lily Marbury in BBC’s ‘The ABC Murders.’ A significant turning point in her career occurred in October 2018 when she was cast in the main role of Yennefer of Vengerberg in Netflix’s ‘The Witcher.’ The series premiered on December 20, 2019, with Chalotra starring in all three seasons released through 2023. She has also contributed extensively to voice acting, with roles in ‘Sherwood’ (2019), ‘The Cipher’ (2020), ‘Moriarty: The Silent Order’ (2023), and the video game ‘Unknown 9: Awakening’ (2024), along with animated series ‘Twilight of the Gods’ (2024) and ‘Creature Commandos’ (2024).
