Armstrong Williams was born on February 5, 1962, in Marion, South Carolina. He grew up on his family’s 200-acre tobacco farm as one of ten children. Early in his life, he developed a talent for public speaking, which he honed during his high school years. He pursued higher education at South Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and English in 1981. After graduating, Williams moved to Washington D.C., where he began his career in public service. He served as a presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he supported rural farmers. His career continued with a role as confidential assistant to Clarence Thomas, who was then chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Williams also worked as a legislative aide and advisor to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina.
In 1991, Williams co-founded the Graham Williams Group, an international marketing, advertising, and media public relations consulting firm, where he currently serves as CEO. His media career expanded into radio in 1991 with his first radio show. He later joined The Salem Radio Network in 1998, which syndicated his national radio show across 26 major U.S. markets. In 2002, he moved to the Talk America Radio Network and in 2005, he became a co-host on “Drive Time Dialogue” with Sam Greenfield on WWRL 1600 AM. In 2008, he launched “The Armstrong Williams Show” on XM Satellite Radio Power 128, now SiriusXM Urban View. Later, he also launched “The Right Side with Armstrong Williams” in 1995, and from 2002 to 2005, he hosted “On Point with Armstrong Williams” on TV One. His company acquired several television stations, making him the largest African-American owner of television stations in the U.S. at one point. In 2014, the FCC approved the transfer of station licenses, including WMMP, WCFT-TV, and WJSU-TV, to Howard Stirk Holdings. Further acquisitions included KVMY in 2015 and WLYH-TV. These acquisitions expanded his media footprint considerably. In 2021, South Carolina State University awarded him an honorary doctorate.
