Arsenio Hall was born on February 12, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Fred and Annie Hall, with his father working as a Baptist minister. He developed an early interest in performance, beginning as a child magician. Hall pursued comedy professionally, moving to Chicago and then Los Angeles. Early career highlights included appearances on “Soul Train” and working as the announcer/sidekick for Alan Thicke on “Thicke of the Night” in 1984. He also voiced Winston Zeddemore in “The Real Ghostbusters” from 1986 to 1987. His on-screen acting career began with roles in films like “Amazon Women on the Moon” (1987) and a co-starring role alongside Eddie Murphy in “Coming to America” (1988), where he played multiple characters including Semmi and Reverend Brown.
Hall’s breakthrough came with the launch of “The Arsenio Hall Show” in January 1989. The syndicated late-night program achieved significant success, particularly among younger demographics. The show was known for its dynamic atmosphere and audience participation, including the distinctive “Woof, woof, woof!” chant. During its run from 1989 to 1994, the show distinguished itself by featuring a diverse range of guests. A notable moment was when then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton appeared in June 1992, playing the saxophone, an event widely seen as pivotal in his outreach to younger and minority voters. Hall leveraged his platform to support gay rights and HIV/AIDS awareness, significantly contributing to the Magic Johnson Foundation.
Following the initial run of his talk show, Hall continued his career with various acting and hosting roles. He starred in the sitcom “Arsenio” (1997) and “Martial Law” (1998–2000). He also hosted the revival of “Star Search” from 2003 to 2004. In 2012, Hall won NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice 5,” raising $250,000 for the Magic Johnson Foundation. A revival of “The Arsenio Hall Show” aired from 2013 to 2014. He reprised his role as Semmi in “Coming 2 America” in 2021, and joined the cast of “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” as Vernell in 2024.
