United States Art Briles is a distinguished American football coach, recognized for his strategic acumen and leadership across high school and collegiate levels. His career includes significant achievements, such as leading teams to multiple championships and developing notable talent.
Art Briles was hired as the head coach for the Guelfi Firenze American football team in the Italian Football League for the 2018 season, leading them to an 8-3 record and a championship loss. He re-signed to coach the team again for the 2022 season, where he led them to a 6–2 regular season, three playoff wins, and secured the 41st Italian Bowl championship.
Arthur Ray Briles, born on December 3, 1955, in Rule, Texas, embarked on his football journey as a player, excelling as a quarterback at Rule High School, where he achieved all-state honors and led his team to the Texas Class B state championship game in 1973. He continued his playing career as a wide receiver at the University of Houston before transferring to Texas Tech University, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in 1979. Briles furthered his education by earning a master’s degree in education from Abilene Christian University, laying the foundation for his extensive coaching career.
Briles’ coaching career began in high school, where he established a formidable reputation. He served as an assistant at Sundown and Sweetwater High Schools before taking on head coaching roles at Hamlin High School (1984-1985) and Georgetown High School (1986-1987). His most significant high school tenure was at Stephenville High School (1988-1999), where he transformed the program, leading them to four state championships, including back-to-back titles in 1993-1994 and again in 1998-1999. During this period, Briles was instrumental in developing a potent offensive scheme and nurturing six of his quarterbacks to Division I colleges, including Kevin Kolb and his son, Kendal Briles. After a brief return to high school coaching at Mount Vernon High School (2019-2020), where he posted a 20-6 record, Briles has since returned to coach the Guelfi Firenze in the Italian Football League.
His transition to college coaching began as a running backs coach at Texas Tech (2000-2002), where he improved the team’s rushing average and coached future NFL players like Ricky A. Williams and Wes Welker. Briles then served as head coach for the Houston Cougars (2003-2007), transforming a struggling program into a Conference USA champion in 2006. He moved to Baylor (2008-2015), where he led the Bears to unprecedented success, including two Big 12 titles in 2013 and 2014, and developed Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. Following his departure from Baylor amid the sexual assault scandal, he coached the Guelfi Firenze in the Italian Football League (2018; 2022-present), securing an Italian Bowl championship in 2022.
