Ashish Joshi, Dean and Distinguished University Professor of the School of Public Health at the University of Memphis, is a recognized innovator, entrepreneur, and educator who applies population health informatics to improve global health outcomes. He was notably recognized with the Distinguished Service Award by the NYC Test and Trace Corps for his critical contributions to the COVID-19 response. Dr. Joshi’s expertise stems from academic training in clinical medicine, public health, and informatics, which he leverages to design and develop human-centered, technology-enabled interventions that enhance population health across diverse community settings.
His work focuses on utilizing community and hospital-based data to implement and evaluate informatics-enabled solutions, addressing 21st-century social, economic, and health inequities. Dr. Joshi has a documented history of conceptualizing models, including SMAART (Sustainable, Multisector, Accessible, Affordable, Reimbursable, and Tailored), which integrates principles from human-centered design, humanistic, behavioral, learning, and information processing theory to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. He has designed and developed various digital health interventions, such as population health dashboards, consumer health informatics, m-health interventions, and population-based surveillance tools.
Expanding faculty numbers and initiating programs like the Research Initiative Supporting Excellence in early careeR development (RISER) program for junior faculty mentorship, Dr. Joshi has significantly advanced the institution’s academic and research capacities. His community engagement approach, ‘Uplift,’ has fostered key partnerships with health departments, school systems, and community centers, leading to national recognition with the ASPPH 2024 Harrison C Spencer Award for outstanding community service. In 2024, Dr.
Joshi was also honored with the University of Memphis PI Millionaire Award and is a recipient of the University of Memphis Tigers Ascending to Excellence Award and the inaugural CUNY SPH Legacy Award.
