Ato Essandoh

Ato Essandoh was born on July 29, 1972, in Schenectady, New York, to parents from Ghana. His early academic pursuits led him to Cornell University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. It was during this period, through a dare from a girlfriend to participate in a school play, that Essandoh discovered his passion for acting. This turning point led him to study acting under James Price at The Acting Studio – New York in New York City, establishing the foundation for his future career.

Essandoh began his acting career with a small role in the drama series “Third Watch” in 2001. He steadily gained recognition through various film and television roles, including his portrayal of Titembay in Zach Braff’s “Garden State” (2004), a role that left a notable impression. His filmography expanded to include significant projects such as “Blood Diamond” (2006) and his role as Craig Jeffers in “Jason Bourne” (2016). On television, he has been a recurring presence in series like “Blue Bloods” (2011–2016) as Reverend Darnell Potter and Dr. Isidore Latham in “Chicago Med” (2016–2021). These roles demonstrate his ability to adapt to diverse characters across different genres.

His career further evolved with main roles in prominent television series. Essandoh starred as Lester Grimes in HBO’s “Vinyl” (2016), Kwesi Weisberg-Abban in Netflix’s “Away” (2020), and as Stuart Heyford in “The Diplomat” (2023–present). In addition to his acting, Essandoh co-founded The Defiant Ones, a writing and performance group, showcasing his broader creative interests. He also launched a podcast, “Unrelated,” with childhood friend Chris Cecot, where they discuss their experiences shaped by race and color. His varied work in film, television, and other creative ventures highlights a career marked by continuous growth and engagement with diverse narratives.
