Austin Nichols

Austin Nichols was born on April 24, 1980, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and later moved to Austin, Texas, where he spent his formative years. His early life was marked by a significant involvement in competitive water skiing. He competed internationally, representing the United States junior water ski team in the Pan-American Championships in 1997, and was once ranked third in the world for the Tricks event. He sustained a shoulder injury that led him to discontinue the sport, shifting his focus towards acting. Nichols pursued his academic interests, graduating from the University of Southern California in 2002 with a degree in creative writing, even as his acting career began to take shape during this period.

Nichols’ acting career started with early guest appearances in television series such as “Sliders” (1999), “Odd Man Out” (1999), “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” (2001), and “Family Law” (2001). His initial break came in 2002 with a role in “Six Feet Under.” Major film roles followed, including the environmental blockbuster “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004), where he played J.D., and “Wimbledon” (2004) opposite Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany. For “Wimbledon,” Nichols underwent extensive tennis training, with professional tennis player Pat Cash noting his rapid skill development. He continued to build his acting portfolio with roles in films like “Glory Road” (2006), where he portrayed one of the white players on the pioneering 1966 NCAA championship basketball team, and “The House of Usher” (2006). Nichols has also made his mark as a director, taking on episodes of television series such as “One Tree Hill” and “Walker.

His television career includes significant roles in several popular series. After playing Morgan Earp in “Deadwood” (2006), he took on the title role of John Monad in David Milch’s “John From Cincinnati” (2007). Nichols joined the cast of “One Tree Hill” as Julian Baker, becoming a series regular and directing two episodes. He further solidified his television presence with recurring roles in “Ray Donovan” (2013–2019) as Tommy Wheeler, “Bates Motel” (2017) as Sam Loomis, and notably as Spencer Monroe in AMC’s “The Walking Dead” (2015–2016), where he was promoted to a series regular. His recent work includes the 2024 Lifetime film “Gaslit By My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story,” demonstrating a continuous engagement in diverse projects across film and television.
