Born on April 14, 1995, in Austin, Texas, Baker Reagan Mayfield began his football career as a walk-on quarterback for the Lake Travis High School Cavaliers. He led his high school team to a 25-2 record and a 4A State Championship in 2011, accumulating 6,255 passing yards and 67 touchdowns. He then attended Texas Tech in 2013 as a walk-on, becoming the first true freshman walk-on quarterback to start an FBS season opener. His performance earned him the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week and the Big 12 Conference Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. After one season, Mayfield transferred to the University of Oklahoma, where he was ineligible to play in 2014 due to transfer rules, which led to the establishment of the “Baker Mayfield rule” allowing walk-ons to transfer within the Big 12 without a loss of eligibility.
Mayfield’s tenure at Oklahoma (2015-2017) was exceptionally successful. He was named the starting quarterback in 2015, finishing the year with 3,700 passing yards and 36 touchdowns, placing fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. In 2017, he won the prestigious Heisman Trophy, becoming the first and only walk-on player to achieve this honor. He also secured the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien Award, and was named the Associated Press Player of the Year. Mayfield was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft, where he set the NFL rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns with 27 and ended the Browns’ 19-game winless streak in his debut. He led the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002 and their first playoff victory since 1994 during the 2020 season.
After a period with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams in 2022, Mayfield joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. He quickly established himself, leading the Buccaneers to two consecutive NFC South division titles and a playoff victory. In 2024, he achieved career highs in completions (407), passing yards (4,500), passing touchdowns (41), and completion percentage (71.4%), also earning a career-high passer rating of 106.8. He has earned two consecutive Pro Bowl selections in 2023 and 2024, and is currently the all-time leader in playoff passer rating (minimum 150 attempts). Beyond football, Mayfield is actively involved in community initiatives through the ‘Baker & Emily Mayfield Foundation’, supporting disaster relief and educational programs.
