About

Barbara Ann Corcoran was born on March 10, 1949, in Edgewater, New Jersey. She grew up in a working-class Irish-Catholic family, the second of ten children. Diagnosed with dyslexia later in life, Corcoran faced academic challenges during her schooling, which she indicates motivated her to work harder. She completed her education at St. Thomas Aquinas College, earning a degree in education in 1971. Despite teaching for a brief period, Corcoran gained diverse work experience, holding 20 different jobs by the age of 23. This early career phase, including a role renting apartments in New York City and working as a waitress, provided foundational experience before she ventured into entrepreneurship.

In 1973, with a $1,000 loan from her then-boyfriend, Corcoran co-founded The Corcoran-Simonè, a real estate company in New York City. After seven years, she established her own firm, The Corcoran Group, which she grew into a prominent real estate brokerage. During the mid-1970s, she also initiated ‘The Corcoran Report,’ a newsletter that tracked real estate data trends in New York City. A significant career milestone occurred in 2001 when Corcoran sold The Corcoran Group to NRT for $66 million, marking a major success in her entrepreneurial journey. Her business acumen and experience led her to venture into television.

Corcoran became one of the original ‘Shark’ investors on ABC’s ‘Shark Tank,’ appearing in all 15 seasons to date. She has made 130 deals on the show, with her largest investment being $350,000 for 40% of Coverplay. Notably, her $50,000 investment in The Comfy, an oversized wearable blanket, generated $468 million before she was bought out. Beyond ‘Shark Tank,’ Corcoran is a syndicated columnist for publications such as ‘More,’ ‘The Daily Review,’ and ‘Redbook,’ and writes a weekly column for the ‘New York Daily News.’ She has authored several books, including “Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business,” and hosts ‘The Millionaire Broker with Barbara Corcoran’ on CNBC. Additionally, she participated as a contestant on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2017.
