Barry Lee Levinson was born on April 6, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied broadcast journalism at Baltimore Junior College and American University before moving to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, Levinson initially pursued acting and comedy, working in comedy clubs where he developed his writing skills. His early career also included writing for television variety shows such as “The Carol Burnett Show” in the 1970s, where he earned two Emmys. He also contributed to films like Mel Brooks’s “Silent Movie” (1976) and “High Anxiety” (1977), and co-wrote the Oscar-nominated script for “. . .And Justice for All” (1979).
Levinson made his directorial debut with “Diner” (1982), a film he also wrote, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This film was the first of several set in his native Baltimore, including “Tin Men” (1987), “Avalon” (1990), and “Liberty Heights” (1999). Significant directorial achievements include “The Natural” (1984), “Good Morning, Vietnam” (1987), and his most critically and financially successful film, “Rain Man” (1988). “Rain Man” garnered four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Levinson. His directorial credits further include “Bugsy” (1991), which received ten Academy Award nominations, and the political satire “Wag the Dog” (1997).
Beyond feature films, Levinson has been active in television production. He co-founded Baltimore Pictures and has served as an executive producer for series like “Homicide: Life on the Street” (1993-1999) and HBO’s “Oz.” He also directed TV movies such as “You Don’t Know Jack” (2010), “The Wizard of Lies” (2017), and “Paterno” (2018). In 2021, he co-executive produced and directed episodes of the Hulu miniseries “Dopesick.” Throughout his career, Levinson has consistently engaged with projects across various genres, often bringing a distinct storytelling style to his work.
