Barry Levinson

Barry Levinson is an American director, screenwriter, and producer, recognized for his versatile contributions to film and television. His work includes feature films like “Rain Man” and critically acclaimed television series such as “Homicide: Life on the Street.” After earning two Emmys for his writing on The Carol Burnett Show in the 1970s and co-writing the Oscar-nominated script for …And Justice for All in 1979, Barry Levinson made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Diner (1982), which also earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He continued his early directorial success with films such as The Natural (1984) and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987). Levinson achieved widespread critical and financial success with Rain Man (1988), which garnered four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Levinson, and was awarded the Golden Bear at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival in 1989.

He received the Austin Film Festival’s Distinguished Screenwriter Award in 2004 and the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement from the Writers Guild of America in 2010, recognizing his profound impact on the craft. His directorial efforts during this period included the feature films The Bay (2012), The Humbling (2014), and Rock the Kasbah (2015). He also helmed several acclaimed television movies, notably You Don’t Know Jack (2010), The Wizard of Lies (2017), and Paterno (2018). More recently, Levinson co-executive produced and directed episodes of the Hulu miniseries Dopesick in 2021, which garnered critical acclaim.

His commitment to compelling storytelling continues with upcoming directorial projects, including The Alto Knights and Bucks County, USA, both slated for release in 2025. Levinson remains a prolific and respected figure in film and television, consistently delivering impactful narratives across various genres.
