Bianca Walkden, born on September 29, 1991, in Liverpool, England, embarked on her taekwondo journey at the age of 11. She quickly rose through the ranks, first making her mark internationally with a bronze medal at the 2010 European Championships in St. Petersburg. Her career progression saw her achieve significant milestones, including her first European championship title in Baku in 2014, defeating Olga Ivanova. In May 2015, Walkden became a world champion in the +73kg category at the World Taekwondo Championships in Russia, triumphing over Gwladys Epangue. This made her the second British athlete to secure a world title in Taekwondo. She successfully defended her European title in 2016 in Montreux.
Walkden’s Olympic career began at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, where she earned a bronze medal in the women’s +67kg division after defeating Wiam Dislam. She continued her dominance in 2017 by successfully defending her world title in Muju, South Korea, becoming the first Briton to achieve this feat. That same year, she made history again by winning gold medals at all four World Grand Prix events and secured a record-breaking £52,000 prize at the Grand Slam Series in China. In May 2019, Walkden secured her third world title at the World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester through a disqualification victory over Zheng Shuyin, a moment notable for its controversial outcome and her defense of her competitive strategy. She earned her second consecutive Olympic bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games, overcoming Aleksandra Kowalczuk after a narrow semi-final defeat to Lee Da-bin. In 2022, she claimed her fourth European championship title in Manchester, defeating Aleksandra Kowalczuk 14-3. In 2023, Walkden secured a bronze medal at the World Championships in Baku. She was not selected for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Throughout her career, Walkden has maintained a high level of performance, participating in 108 international tournaments and winning 194 out of 252 registered fights, demonstrating a 77.0% win rate. Her club affiliation is Liverpool Elite Taekwondo, and she represents GB Taekwondo. She often competed in the heavyweight category (+67kg, +73kg). She holds a strong competitive rivalry with athletes like Zheng Shuyin and Aleksandra Kowalczuk, frequently encountering them in major finals.
