Billy Besson was born on March 8, 1981, in Papeete, French Polynesia. He developed his sailing skills in Tahiti, where multihulls are integral to the local sailing culture. Early in his career, Besson achieved success as a world champion in the Dart 18 and F18 classes. His career progressed significantly with his specialization in foiling catamarans. He is recognized for his expertise in navigating various foiling catamaran types, including F50, TF26, and TF35.
Besson achieved four world championship titles in the Nacra 17 class, partnering with Marie Riou. This partnership led them to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where they finished in 6th place. His participation in the Rio Olympics occurred despite a serious back injury sustained prior to the event. Following this, while Riou competed in the Volvo Ocean Race in 2018, Besson explored offshore sailing, participating in maxi-trimaran campaigns with Sodebo and Banque Populaire.
From 2018 to October 2021, Besson served as the French skipper for SailGP, a global championship for foiling F50 catamarans. In 2022, he began a new Olympic preparation alongside Noa Ancian, focusing on the Nacra 17 class for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. His career demonstrates a consistent focus on high-performance catamaran sailing.
