William John Horschel was born on December 7, 1986, in Grant, Florida. He attended Bayside High School in Palm Bay, Florida. Horschel pursued his collegiate golf career at the University of Florida, playing for the Florida Gators men’s golf team from 2005 to 2009. During his time at Florida, he earned four All-American honors, including three first-team selections, and was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) player of the year in both 2007 and 2009. He graduated in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management. As an amateur, Horschel represented the United States in the Palmer Cup in 2007 and 2008, and was part of the victorious 2007 Walker Cup team, where he achieved a 3–1 record.
Horschel turned professional in 2009, earning his PGA Tour card through qualifying school in December of that year. A wrist injury limited his first professional season on the PGA Tour. He regained his Tour card in 2010 and 2012 through qualifying school. His breakthrough came in 2013 with his first PGA Tour victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He went on to win the BMW Championship and The Tour Championship in 2014, securing the FedEx Cup. This period marked a significant turning point in his professional career. His success continued with wins including the AT&T Byron Nelson in 2017, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2018 with partner Scott Piercy, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in 2021, and the BMW PGA Championship in the same year, becoming the first American to win it twice with his victory in 2024. He has accumulated 11 professional wins, including 8 on the PGA Tour and 3 on the European Tour. In 2022, he represented the U.S. team in the Presidents Cup.
