About

Robert William Flay was born on December 10, 1964, in New York City. His early experiences in the restaurant industry included a pizza parlor and Baskin-Robbins, before landing a position making salads at Joe Allen Restaurant in Manhattan’s Theater District. Impressed by his natural talent, the restaurant’s owner funded his tuition at the French Culinary Institute. Flay graduated from the French Culinary Institute in 1984, a member of its first graduating class. His career quickly progressed, taking on a sous-chef role and later an executive chef position at the Brighton Grill. He expanded his culinary knowledge under Jonathan Waxman, which influenced his adoption of Southwestern cooking techniques, a style that would become a hallmark of his career.

Flay became executive chef of Miracle Grill in the East Village, working there from 1988 to 1990. Recognizing his talent, Jerome Kretchmer offered him the executive chef position at Mesa Grill, which opened in 1991. Flay soon became a partner in the venture. In 1993, he partnered with Laurence Kretchmer to open Bolo Bar & Restaurant. His restaurant ventures expanded globally with a second Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 2004, followed by Bar Americain in Midtown Manhattan in 2005, and Bobby Flay Steak in Atlantic City in 2006. He also opened a third Mesa Grill in the Bahamas in 2007. The Las Vegas Mesa Grill earned him a Michelin Star in 2008. Flay established the Bobby Flay Scholarship in 2003, providing financial aid to students at the French Culinary Institute.

His television career commenced significantly in 1995 with Food Network, where he has hosted numerous shows, including “Hot Off the Grill with Bobby Flay,” “Boy Meets Grill,” “Throwdown! with Bobby Flay,” and “Beat Bobby Flay.” He has been an Iron Chef on “Iron Chef America.” In 2021, he launched Made by Nacho, a premium cat food company, named after his Maine Coon cat. Flay has authored 18 best-selling cookbooks and received accolades such as the 1993 James Beard Award for Rising Star Chef of the Year and five Daytime Emmy Awards. In 2015, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking a significant recognition for his contributions to the culinary world.
