Nathaniel McMillan was born on August 3, 1964, in Raleigh, North Carolina. His basketball journey began at William G. Enloe High School, leading him to Chowan College for two years before transferring to North Carolina State University. At NC State, under coach Jim Valvano, McMillan played a crucial role in the team’s success, including a first-place tie in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1985 and reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournaments of 1985 and 1986. During his collegiate career, he played alongside future NBA talents such as Spud Webb and Vinny Del Negro.
Drafted 30th overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1986 NBA draft, McMillan spent his entire 12-year playing career with the team. He was recognized for his defensive skills, leading the NBA in steals per game in the 1993–94 season and earning two selections to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1994, 1995). Known as “Mr. Sonic” for his dedication, his number 10 jersey was retired by the SuperSonics. After retiring as a player in 1998, McMillan transitioned to coaching, starting as an assistant for the SuperSonics before becoming their head coach in 2000. He later coached the Portland Trail Blazers, Indiana Pacers, and Atlanta Hawks, and is now an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Throughout his coaching career, McMillan has achieved significant milestones, including leading the Seattle SuperSonics to a 52–30 record and the Western Conference semifinals in the 2004–05 season. He guided the Portland Trail Blazers to a 50-win season despite numerous player injuries. With the Indiana Pacers, he led the team to four consecutive playoff appearances. As interim and then head coach for the Atlanta Hawks, he orchestrated an eight-game winning streak in 2021 and guided them to the Eastern Conference finals, marking a significant turnaround for the franchise. McMillan has also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. national team, contributing to Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012, and a bronze medal in the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
