Robert Joseph Ross was born on December 23, 1936, in Richmond, Virginia. He began his football career as a collegiate player at the Virginia Military Institute, where he graduated in 1959. After several years coaching high school football, Ross transitioned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach before securing his first head coaching role at The Citadel in 1973. His early career also included a period as an assistant coach for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, providing him with experience in both collegiate and professional football environments.
Ross’s coaching career progressed with significant tenures at the University of Maryland and Georgia Tech. At Maryland, he developed a high-powered offense and led the Terrapins to three conference titles. His collegiate career peaked in 1990 at Georgia Tech, where he guided the Yellow Jackets to an undefeated season and a share of the national title, earning him national coach of the year honors. This success propelled him back into the NFL as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1992, where he led the team to a division title in his first season and an appearance in Super Bowl XXIX in 1994.
Following his time with the Chargers, Ross served as head coach and vice president of football operations for the Detroit Lions, leading them to playoff appearances in 1997 and 1999. After a brief retirement, he returned to coaching in 2003 as the head coach for the United States Military Academy at West Point. Throughout his career, Ross demonstrated a consistent ability to build competitive teams and achieve significant milestones across different levels of football.
