Liu Jiayu

Few athletes have reshaped winter sports in China the way Liu Jiayu has. A pioneer of the halfpipe, she made the unlikely switch from martial arts to snowboarding in 2003, taking up the sport at the relatively late age of 11. What began as an unconventional transition soon developed into one of the most consistent competitive careers in snowboarding, with Liu at the forefront of China’s emergence on the international winter sports stage.

Her breakthrough arrived on the biggest platforms in the sport. She claimed the halfpipe title at the FIS Snowboarding World Championships in 2009, and across her World Cup career she collected six victories — a tally that placed her among the winningest halfpipe riders of her era. Liu also carried China’s flag hopes across three consecutive Olympic cycles, competing at the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Winter Games.

The 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang supplied her defining moment: a silver medal in the halfpipe, finishing 2nd after earlier Olympic results of 4th in 2010 and 9th in 2014. That podium finish capped more than a decade of elite competition and affirmed the path she first took when she left martial arts behind at age 11.

From a late starter to an Olympic medalist and multiple World Cup winner, Liu Jiayu’s trajectory has inspired a generation of Chinese snowboarders and helped expand the sport’s reach throughout Asia.
