Steven Jason Williams, born on July 24, 1974, and known online as Boogie2988 or simply Boogie, is an American YouTuber. He gained recognition for his video rants about video games and nerd culture through his fictional persona, Francis. Williams’ content also includes vlogs discussing daily life and mental health, alongside comedic sketches and gaming-related news. After growing up in St. Paul, Virginia, where his father was a coal miner and his mother a preschool teacher, Williams described his childhood as challenging, marked by obesity, a lack of friends, and abuse from his mother. Despite these early difficulties, he views his mother’s passing in 2009 as his life’s saddest moment, following his father’s death from cancer. Williams attended the University of Virginia’s College at Wise but did not complete his degree.
His career path changed significantly after moving to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he spent seven years primarily at home, supported by a friend. During this period, he discovered YouTube and began creating videos, a pursuit he credits with giving his life meaning. His Francis character, designed to parody stereotypes of nerdy video game players, often reacts to trending gaming news and culture. Williams has stated that he intended for viewers to dislike Francis for embodying these stereotypes. His YouTube channel features a range of content from satirical rants to serious discussions, including the ethics of paid promotions and his personal experiences with mental health.
Across his career, Williams has accumulated 3.89 million subscribers and 943 million views on his YouTube channel, which has been active since 2006. He received the Trending Gamer award at The Game Awards in 2016. In November 2023, he was the subject of a feature-length documentary by filmmaker Mike Clum, which explored his career and financial circumstances. Currently, Williams co-hosts “Lolcow Live,” a podcast with fellow internet personality Keemstar. His journey reflects a notable progression from personal struggles to becoming a significant figure in online entertainment.
