Boris Babacar Diaw-Riffiod was born on April 16, 1982, in Cormeilles-en-Parisis, France. He began his professional basketball career in France with Pau-Orthez from 2001 to 2003, participating in the league’s All-Star game and Slam Dunk contest in 2002. His talent was recognized when he was selected 21st overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2003 NBA Draft, marking the start of his 14-season NBA journey. During his early years with the Hawks, he played primarily as a shooting guard, developing his versatile skill set.
In August 2005, Diaw was traded to the Phoenix Suns, where his career trajectory significantly changed. He developed into an all-around player, capable of playing multiple positions from center to point guard, earning him the nickname ‘3D’ for his multidimensional play which emphasized driving, dishing, and defending. His breakout season in 2005-06 saw him average 13.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game, leading to him being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. During the 2006 NBA Playoffs, he further demonstrated his capabilities, averaging 18.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game, including a career-high 34 points in the Western Conference Finals.
Diaw’s career continued with stints at the Charlotte Bobcats from 2008 to 2012, before joining the San Antonio Spurs in March 2012. With the Spurs, he played a crucial role in the team’s success, particularly in their 2014 NBA Championship run. He was inserted into the starting lineup during the 2014 NBA Finals and led all players in total assists while ranking second in total rebounds, demonstrating his integral playmaking and rebounding contributions. After his NBA career, which concluded with the Utah Jazz in 2017, Diaw returned to France and officially announced his retirement from playing in September 2018. He later transitioned into an executive role, becoming president of Metropolitans 92 in July 2019, further solidifying his enduring impact on basketball.
