About

Brent Burns, born on March 9, 1985, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, began his hockey career with the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) during the 2002-03 season. He was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the first round as the 20th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Draft. Upon turning professional, Burns was converted from a right wing to a defenseman by Minnesota Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire. He made his NHL debut on October 8, 2003, against the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring his first NHL goal in his third game against the San Jose Sharks. Early in his career, Burns demonstrated versatility, often shifting between defensive and offensive roles. He recorded a career-high 46 points in the 2010-11 season with the Wild, earning his first trip to the NHL All-Star Game.

On June 24, 2011, Burns was traded to the San Jose Sharks. During the 2012-13 season, the Sharks temporarily moved him to forward, where he contributed 20 points in 23 regular season games. However, he was reinstated as a defenseman in the 2014-15 season, a decision that significantly impacted his career. In 2015-16, Burns had a breakout season, accumulating 75 points (27 goals, 48 assists) and helping the Sharks reach their first Stanley Cup Final. He continued his stellar performance in 2016-17, achieving 76 points (29 goals, 47 assists) and winning the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman. Burns consistently maintained high performance, culminating in a career-high 83 points (16 goals, 67 assists) in 2018-19.

Burns was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on July 13, 2022, where he continued to be a productive defenseman. On January 29, 2023, he played his 1,300th NHL game, becoming the fifth player in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise history to reach this milestone. He achieved his 600th NHL assist on December 2, 2023, joining an elite group of defensemen in NHL history. After three seasons with the Hurricanes, Burns signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche on July 2, 2025, to continue his extensive NHL career. Just three games into his tenure with the Avalanche, on October 11, 2025, Burns played his 1,500th career NHL game, becoming the 23rd player to reach this mark.
