Brent Burns

Brent Burns transitioned from a versatile NHL player capable of playing both forward and defense into a distinguished defenseman, recognized for his offensive contributions and award-winning career. After being drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the first round as the 20th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Draft, Brent Burns made his NHL debut on October 8, 2003. Converted by Minnesota Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire from a right wing to a defenseman, Burns scored his first NHL goal in just his third game against the San Jose Sharks. He demonstrated significant versatility early in his career, frequently shifting between defensive and offensive roles.

On January 29, 2023, he marked a significant milestone by playing his 1,300th NHL game, becoming the fifth player in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise history to achieve this feat. Demonstrating his enduring offensive prowess, Burns achieved his 600th NHL assist on December 2, 2023, joining an elite group of defensemen in NHL history. After three successful seasons with the Hurricanes, Burns signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche on July 2, 2025, to continue his extensive NHL career. Just three games into his tenure with the Avalanche, on October 11, 2025, Burns played his 1,500th career NHL game, becoming only the 23rd player in the league’s history to reach this remarkable mark.
