About

Brian Michael Bendis was born on August 18, 1967, in Cleveland, Ohio. He developed an interest in comic books from a young age, aspiring to become a professional in the industry by age 13. Bendis initially studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and began his career as an artist, illustrating for local magazines and newspapers. He transitioned into writing and illustrating his own crime fiction graphic novels. His early work for Caliber Comics included ‘Spunky Todd,’ ‘Fire,’ and ‘A.K.A. Goldfish.’ In 1996, his best-known early work, ‘Jinx,’ a crime noir series, began publication with Caliber before moving to Image Comics.

Bendis gained significant recognition for his contributions to Marvel Comics, starting with ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ in 2000. This series targeted a new generation of readers and became a bestseller. He co-created characters like Miles Morales and Jessica Jones. His extensive work at Marvel included relaunches of the Avengers franchise with ‘New Avengers’ in 2004, and major storylines such as ‘Avengers Disassembled’ (2004–2005), ‘Secret War’ (2004–2005), ‘House of M’ (2005), ‘Secret Invasion’ (2008), ‘Siege’ (2010), and ‘Age of Ultron’ (2013). After nearly two decades at Marvel, he transitioned to DC Comics in 2017, where he contributed to significant titles like ‘Action Comics’ and ‘Superman’.

Beyond comics, Bendis has worked in television, video games, and film. He co-executive produced and wrote for ‘Spider-Man: The New Animated Series’ in 2003 and served as an executive producer and contributing writer for the ‘Powers’ TV adaptation (2015-2016) on the PlayStation Network. He has also taught courses on graphic novels at The University of Oregon and Portland State University. In 2014, he published ‘Words for Pictures: The Art and Business of Writing Comics and Graphic Novels’, a book based on his academic work. Bendis has received numerous accolades, including five Eisner Awards and the Inkpot Award for his contributions to comic art.
