Bridie Carter was born on December 18, 1970, in Melbourne, Australia, the eldest of three children. Her acting career commenced at the age of six, taking her first classes at the Bouverie Street Theatre in Carlton, Melbourne. She furthered her education at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), from which she graduated in 1994. Carter’s early career involved roles in various Australian television series, laying the foundation for her subsequent prominent contributions to the industry.
Carter achieved significant recognition for her starring role as Tess Silverman McLeod in the Nine Network television series *McLeod’s Daughters*. She appeared in the first six seasons of the show, spanning from 2001 to 2006, across 146 episodes. During this period, her performance led to multiple nominations for the TV Week Logie Awards. In 2003 and 2004, she was nominated for a Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress. In 2004, she also received a nomination for the Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Actress, an industry-voted award. Further nominations for Most Popular Actress and Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television followed in 2005 and 2006. Her television credits also include appearances in *G.P.*, *Water Rats*, *All Saints*, *Murder Call*, and *Above the Law*, where she held a main role as Senior Constable Debbie Curtis in 2000.
Following her time on *McLeod’s Daughters*, Carter continued to work in both television and theatre. In 2007, she was a contestant on *Dancing with the Stars*, ultimately winning the season alongside professional dancer Craig Monley. She reunited with *McLeod’s Daughters* co-star Aaron Jeffery for a stage production of A.R. Gurney’s *Love Letters* in 2009. More recently, from 2015 to 2018, Carter featured in the comedy-drama series *800 Words* for three seasons, portraying the character of Jan across 40 episodes. In 2021, she took on a recurring role as Susie McAllister in the long-running soap opera *Home and Away*, marking her third appearance in the series after earlier guest roles in 1995 and 1999. In May 2004, she married Michael Wilson.
