Bruce Beresford was born in Australia and graduated from Sydney University in 1962. His early career included serving as a Film Officer for the British Film Institute Production Board. He was a key figure in the Australian New Wave of the 1970s, which saw a resurgence in Australian cinema. His work from this period helped establish the foundation for his extensive career, showcasing a diverse range of narrative styles and themes.
Throughout his career, Beresford has directed over 30 feature films. Notable achievements include directing “Tender Mercies” (1983) and “Breaker Morant” (1980), both of which garnered critical acclaim and awards. “Tender Mercies” earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. His filmography also includes “Ladies in Black” (2018), which he worked to bring to the screen.
