About

Daniel Handler was born on February 28, 1970, in San Francisco, California. His father, Louis Handler, was an accountant and a Jewish refugee from Germany, while his mother, Sandra Handler, was a retired dean at the City College of San Francisco. Handler pursued his higher education at Wesleyan University, graduating in 1992. Early in his career, he wrote his first novel, “The Basic Eight,” in 1999, which initially faced numerous rejections due to its dark themes. This persistence ultimately led to its publication, marking his entry into the literary world. He later published his second novel, “Watch Your Mouth,” prior to the release of “The Basic Eight.”

Handler is widely known for his children’s book series authored under the pen name Lemony Snicket. This pseudonym became famous with “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” a 13-novel series published between 1999 and 2006. This series chronicled the misadventures of the Baudelaire orphans and gained significant popularity, leading to a 2004 film adaptation and a Netflix series from 2017 to 2019. In addition to his literary achievements, Handler has also contributed to the music industry. He played the accordion in several bands, notably appearing on The Magnetic Fields’ three-album set, “69 Love Songs,” in 1999, and has contributed to other projects such as The 6ths and The Gothic Archies.

His career also extends to film and television. He wrote screenplays for films like “Rick” (2003) and “Kill the Poor” (2003). He was involved in the screenwriting for the 2004 film adaptation of “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” and later served as a writer for the Netflix series adaptation of the same name, contributing both to the script and lyrics for the theme song. In 2017, Handler also penned the play “Imaginary Comforts,” which premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
