Frank Darabont

Frank Darabont is one of only six filmmakers to have their first two feature films nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award: The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and The Green Mile (1999). His adaptation of Stephen King’s novella, The Shawshank Redemption, garnered seven Oscar nominations, earning Darabont an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1995. The acclaimed film also secured him the Humanitas Prize, the PEN Center USA West Award, and the Scriptor Award for its screenplay. Following this success, Darabont directed and adapted The Green Mile, which received four Oscar nominations, including a Best Picture nomination and Darabont’s second Best Adapted Screenplay nomination in 2000.

He further established his screenwriting prowess with horror films such as The Blob (1988) and The Fly II (1989). Darabont made his directorial debut with the TV movie Buried Alive in 1990, setting the stage for his subsequent acclaimed feature film work. He continued to direct with films including The Majestic (2001) and returned to adapting Stephen King’s work with The Mist (2007). In 2004, he also served as an executive producer for the critically acclaimed film Collateral.

Expanding his influence into television, Darabont developed and executive-produced the groundbreaking first season and the first half of the second season of AMC’s critically acclaimed series The Walking Dead (2010–2011), for which he also directed the highly-rated pilot episode. He later demonstrated his versatility by creating, writing, and directing episodes for the crime drama series Mob City (2013). In recognition of his significant contributions to cinema, Darabont was honored with the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award at the Austin Film Festival in 2012. Looking ahead, Darabont is slated to direct two episodes of the highly anticipated fifth season of Netflix’s award-winning series Stranger Things in 2025, further solidifying his enduring impact on genre storytelling.
