About

Born in a refugee camp in Montbéliard, France, in 1959, Frank Árpád Darabont is the son of Hungarian parents who had fled the 1956 Hungarian revolution. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was an infant, where he later attended Hollywood High School. His entry into the film industry began as a production assistant on the 1981 film *Hell Night*. Over the next six years, he worked in the art department as a set dresser and in set construction, while simultaneously striving to establish himself as a writer. His first produced writing credit, shared, was for *A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors* in 1987. Darabont’s early career also included screenwriting for horror films such as *The Blob* (1988) and *The Fly II* (1989), laying the groundwork for his future success.

Darabont achieved significant recognition as a director with his adaptations of Stephen King’s novellas. He is one of only six filmmakers to have their first two feature films nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award: *The Shawshank Redemption* (1994) and *The Green Mile* (1999). Both films earned him Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as nominations from the Director’s Guild of America. *The Shawshank Redemption* garnered seven Oscar nominations and won him the Humanitas Prize, the PEN Center USA West Award, and the Scriptor Award for its screenplay. *The Green Mile* received four Oscar nominations, and for his screenplay, Darabont won the Broadcast Film Critics prize and two People’s Choice Awards.

His career continued to evolve with directorial stints on films like *The Majestic* (2001) and *The Mist* (2007), another successful Stephen King adaptation. Darabont also played a crucial role in television, developing and executive-producing the first season and first half of the second season of AMC’s *The Walking Dead* (2010–2011), for which he directed the pilot episode. Later, he created, wrote, and directed episodes for the TV series *Mob City* (2013). His work is characterized by a commitment to storytelling and character depth, frequently adapting challenging source material into critically acclaimed and commercially successful projects.
