This dominant collegiate performance positioned him as the first overall pick in the 1985 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, marking the start of a legendary professional career. Smith quickly established himself as a premier pass rusher, dedicating 15 impactful seasons to the Buffalo Bills. During his tenure, he was instrumental in leading the team to the postseason in 10 of those years, including an unprecedented four consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1990 to 1993. His relentless pressure on opposing offenses led to a career-high 19 sacks in 1990, earning him his first NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

Smith secured this prestigious honor again in 1996 and was selected to the Pro Bowl 11 times, a testament to his consistent elite performance.
