About

Bryan Brown was born on June 23, 1947, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He began his acting career in amateur theatre after working as an actuarial student at AMP. His passion for acting led him to Britain in 1972, where he secured minor roles at the Old Vic. Upon returning to Australia, he became a member of the Genesian Theatre and then the Queensland Theatre Company in 1975, performing in ‘A Man for All Seasons’ and ‘The Rainmaker’. His early film work included minor parts in ‘Scobie Malone’ (1975) and ‘The Irishman’ (1978), but it was his lead role in ‘The Love Letters from Teralba Road’ (1977) that began to establish his presence in Australian cinema. A significant turning point in his career arrived in 1980 with his performance in Bruce Beresford’s ‘Breaker Morant’, bringing him international recognition and an AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Brown’s career gained substantial international momentum with his leading role as Joe Harmon in the TV miniseries “A Town Like Alice” (1981) and later as Luke O’Neil in “The Thorn Birds” (1983). For “The Thorn Birds”, he received nominations for a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award, marking his status as a prominent international actor. This success led to roles in major Hollywood productions such as “Give My Regards to Broad Street” (1984) with Paul McCartney, “F/X” (1986), “Cocktail” (1988) alongside Tom Cruise, and “Gorillas in the Mist” (1988) with Sigourney Weaver. He also reprised his role in the sequel “F/X2” (1991), where he also served as an executive producer. Bryan Brown’s work as a producer began with ‘Dead Heart’ (1996) and continued with the TV series ‘Twisted Tales’ (1996) and ‘Two Twisted’ (2005).

Throughout his career, Brown has remained actively involved in Australian productions, starring in films like “Two Hands” (1999), “Dirty Deeds” (2002), and “Australia” (2008). He has also taken on executive producer roles for projects such as ‘Let’s Talk About’ (2015) and ‘Lessons from the Grave’ (2014) and served as a producer for ‘Palm Beach’ (2019) and ‘Beautiful Kate’ (2009), both directed by his wife, Rachel Ward. His recent acting credits include “Boy Swallows Universe” (2024), “Anyone But You” (2023), and “Darby and Joan” (2022–present). In 2005, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to film, television, and community organizations. In 2021, Brown also ventured into writing with his crime novel, ‘Sweet Jimmy’, followed by ‘The Drowning’ in 2023, both receiving positive reviews.
