Cade Parker Cunningham was born on September 25, 2001, in Arlington, Texas. His early athletic background included playing football as a quarterback, an experience he credits with developing his passing and leadership skills on the basketball court. He transitioned his focus solely to basketball after observing his brother’s college career in the sport. Cunningham attended Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas, becoming a starter during his freshman year. He averaged 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, leading Bowie to the District 6A Region I final and earning the title of District 4-6A Newcomer of the Year. In his sophomore year, he averaged 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game, receiving District 4-6A co-MVP honors and Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region recognition.
Cunningham transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida for his junior year, joining one of the top high school basketball programs in the country. He consistently performed at a high level, contributing to Montverde’s success. In his senior season, playing alongside other top recruits like Scottie Barnes and Day’Ron Sharpe, Cunningham’s team achieved a 25-0 record with a significant average margin of victory. Despite playing limited minutes due to the team’s depth, he averaged 13.9 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game. His exceptional high school career culminated in him being named Mr. Basketball USA, Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and MaxPreps National Player of the Year in 2020. He was also selected for the McDonald’s All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit, though these events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cunningham committed to Oklahoma State for college, where his brother served as an assistant coach, becoming the program’s highest-ranked recruit since 2012. In his freshman season (2020-2021), he quickly made an impact, recording 21 points and 10 rebounds in his debut. He earned Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honors and delivered a career-high 40 points and 11 rebounds against Oklahoma.
